His father, on the other hand, was a predator control specialist for the Department of the Interior (DOI). While they both were originally from Texas, the Elliot family resided in Sacramento after Samuel was born, and moved to Portland, Oregon in 1957, when Sam Elliott was 13 years old.
He went to David Douglas high school, located in Oregon, and graduated in 1962. He then pursued a degree in Psychology and English at the University of Oregon, but dropped out after spending two semesters. He moved back to Portland and applied to Clark College, where he graduated from in 1965. Before pursuing a career in acting, Sam Elliott used to work in construction and served in the 146th Airlift Wing of California Air National Guard.
Looking back to his childhood, he stated how his father always encouraged him to finish college and get a degree before pursuing a career in acting, which is an advice Sam is grateful about to this day. He also recalled how his father’s resilient work ethic inspired him to have the enticing work ethic he has to this day.
Elliot’s journey as an actor wasn’t off to a good start. Beginning his career as a character actor, Sam would always be on the unfortunate end of a bad take. As most of the characters he portrayed had similar personality traits, critics would call him “one-dimensional”. However, things changed for the better in 1985, when he got his breakthrough after landing a supporting role in The Mask. The positive reception of the movie as well as Sam Elliott’s portrayal had a tremendously positive impact on Sam’s career, as they not only got him more movie deals from then on, but also helped him with gaining recognition from the big guns as a character actor.

During the discussion on the podcast, Sam Elliot was asked to critique the film “The Power Of Dog”, a 2021 Western Psychological Drama film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst. Things went south when Sam Elliot not only berated the movie’s plot and the cast, but also made homophobic remarks. This resulted in a lot of backlash, where Sam was the sole recipient.
A month into shooting the radio show, however, Sam Elliott apologised for his remark and took his words back, to his fans and everyone involved in the film, especially Benedict Cumberbatch. While we don’t know what Cumberbatch’s response was to Elliott’s apology, we sure hope they have squashed their beef.
