Shohei Ohtani was born on July 5, 1994, in Oshu, Iwate, Japan. His mother was a national level badminton player while his father worked at a local automobile manufacturing plant. Prior to working at an automobile manufacturing plant, his father was an amateur baseball player.
Ohtani has two older siblings; one sister, and one brother. Just like Shohei, Ryuta, his older brother, plays baseball, but as an amateur in the Japanese Industrial League.
As a kid, Shohei was nicknamed “Yakyu Shohen” as he lived, breathed, and ate baseball according to those that knew him back then.
He started playing baseball during his second year in elementary school and was offered to represent one of the better schools in big cities when pursuing the sport as an amateur during his teens. However, he ultimately decided to work on his talents at Hanamaki Higashi High School, the same high school as baseball legend Yusei Kikuchi, whom he admired at an early age.
