The primary contributing factor behind the impressive net worth of the Japanese superstar is the contract he has with the Los Angeles Angels.

The contracts that he signed from 2018 to 2020 as a player of the Angels allowed him to secure a 6-figure salary on an annual basis. However, after being named the AL MVP during the 2020-2021 MLB season, he was offered a 2-year $8.5 million contract; a deal that he didn’t refuse!

According to a reliable source, Ohtani earned $3 million from his 2-year contract in 2021, and is said to receive the remaining sum of $5.5 million when the 2021-2022 season concludes on October 2.

In addition to obtaining a hefty amount of wealth from the Los Angeles franchise, Shohei Ohtani earns an exuberant amount of fortune from all the endorsement deals that he currently has.

After rising to prominence as an athlete in 2021, Ohtani signed a deal with American sportswear brand, Fanatics, Inc. While the sum was never revealed to the public, it was unveiled that the deal was primarily monumental due to the remuneration it contained.

The first deal from Fanatics was just the beginning for Shohei Ohtani, as he signed endorsement deals with prominent shoe brand Asics, luxury brands Hugo Boss and Seiko, and Japan Airlines. He was also in collaboration with Descente, New Era, Panini, Oakley, and the candy brand, Topps.

As his career hit new milestones, his wealth reached new heights. In fact, due to the series of endorsement deals that he signed off the pitch throughout 2021, Shohei Ohtani earned a marvellous sum of $6 million!

His wealth broke the ceiling once again in April 2022 when his endorsement earnings increased from $6 million to a whopping sum of $20 million! A chunk of it came into existence due to all the contract renewals that he was offered. The rest, however, came from new endorsement deals from Mitsubishi Bank, FTX, Kowa, and Salesforce.

All in all, while his net worth does stand at a generous sum of $5.5 million, after skimming through a series of facts and figures, we believe his net worth is easily around 20 million and more!

The Early and Personal Life Of Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani was born on July 5, 1994, in Oshu, Iwate, Japan. His mother was a national level badminton player while his father worked at a local automobile manufacturing plant. Prior to working at an automobile manufacturing plant, his father was an amateur baseball player.

Ohtani has two older siblings; one sister, and one brother. Just like Shohei, Ryuta, his older brother, plays baseball, but as an amateur in the Japanese Industrial League.

As a kid, Shohei was nicknamed “Yakyu Shohen” as he lived, breathed, and ate baseball according to those that knew him back then.

He started playing baseball during his second year in elementary school and was offered to represent one of the better schools in big cities when pursuing the sport as an amateur during his teens. However, he ultimately decided to work on his talents at Hanamaki Higashi High School, the same high school as baseball legend Yusei Kikuchi, whom he admired at an early age. On top of being a promising baseball player, his coach, Hiroshi Sasaki, claimed that Shohei was good at swimming, and could have easily gone pro if he wanted to.

Shohei Ohtani is undoubtedly one of Japan’s most celebrated athletes. Since every move of his was closely followed at an early age due to being a promising prodigy, Ohtani has a massive fan base, which is definitely a positive, but also made him the recipient of tons of backlash every now and then.

While he is moderately fluent in the English language, Ohtani prefers speaking in Japanese and usually uses a translator to deal with the press. In addition to speaking English, Shohei Ohtani also understands a minor portion of Spanish.

Although Ohtani’s schedule is tightly packed, he always makes time for video games. In fact, when he first joined the LA Angels’ franchise, his go-to hobby was playing Clash Royale with the clubbies of Los Angeles Angels.

An Overview Of Shohei Ohtani’s Professional Career In Baseball

After finishing his amateur baseball career at Hanamaki Higashi High School, Shohei expressed his desire of pursuing a career in MLB as a professional rather than spending a few years in Japan and improving his craft. However, after the negotiations he had with the Los Angeles Dodgers fell through, Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, a baseball team based in Hokkaido, decided to draft him.

Ohtani made his professional debut in March, 2013 for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. He represented the team for a little over 5 years, and throughout that time, on top of growing as a player and individual, Ohtani added multiple individual accolades under his belt. He was selected for the All Star Game on multiple occasions, and even took home the Pacific League Most Valuable Player award in 2016. Although he was regarded as somewhat inconsistent during his first years, the Japanese two-way player ended his career as an NPB player on a good note.

In 2017, LA Angels expressed their interest in the abilities of Shohei Ohtani, and signed him later that year for a signing bonus of $2.35 million.

Ohtani made his official debut as one of The Halos in 2018. Although he had a promising start, joined Babe Ruth for being the second ever player to hit over 20 home runs and 10 pitching appearances, and was even clinched the title for Rookie of The Year, Ohtani couldn’t live up to his potential due to damaging his UCL. He underwent Tommy John surgery to deal with that issue in September, 2018, which was a success.

From 2019 to 2020, Ohtani was in a bit of a slump. His efficiency was hampered tremendously and made him a liability to the team as he was still recovering from the 2018 surgery he had. Things went south once again during the 2019 season when he injured one of his knees.

Injuries haunted him once again in 2020, when it was revealed that he had a flexor strain in the middle of the season. This left Ohtani feeling frustrated and useless as he was out for the remainder of the year.

After dealing with a series of injuries throughout 2018 and 2020, Shohei Ohtani began taking better care of himself during the 2021 off-season. He changed his diet and workout routine, and bulked up to 225 pounds. To improve his post-workout recovery and training sessions, he relied on data and technology. He even readjusted his style of play and found a new pitching and hitting form and schedule that catered to his preferences.

To avoid getting waived off, Ohtani signed a two-year $8.5 million deal with the Angels.

The amount of work he put in to improve his game paid off and flourished in the 2021 MLB season, as he broke multiple records that were previously held by former Japanese players, was named Player of The Month, and even made his MLB All-Star Debut. The cherry on top was yet to come, however, as he won the 2021 AL MVP due to his relentless consistency!

Additionally, taking into account how he’s performed so far in 2022, he might even take home the 2022 AL MVP Award if everything pans out in his favour!

Bottom Line

In retrospect, while Shohei Ohtani is surely in his prime as a professional baseball player, he is still very much a newbie in the dating world. Even though the rumour about him being in an entanglement with Kamalani Dung was a spicy titbit, and almost convinced a portion of his fan base, Shohei Ohtani has yet to get married, and is definitely single at the moment.
